Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says Saudi Arabia’s execution of a top Shia cleric is aimed at fomenting sectarian tension in the region. Rouhani made the remark in a meeting with visiting Iraqi foreign minister Ibrahim Ja’fari. The Iranian president described the move as irrational and said Tehran’s foreign policy is based on creating good relations with neighboring countries and strengthening regional stability. Rouhani added that Iran has never acted against the interests of regional countries. Ja’afari also met with the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani. The Iranian official described Nimr’s execution as an unjustifiable act. Meanwhile, the Iraqi top diplomat held a separate meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.
