In an article posted Dec 6 in the elite, Washington-based establishment Mideast journal al-Monitor, former US Undersecretary of State Thomas Pickering, former Iran nuclear negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian, and former US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer jointly warn that any failure to fully meet either side’s obligations under the recent Iran agreement will result in a major disaster, meaning a war. “There is no room for delays, obfuscations, excuses,” they warn.

If Iran fails to meet its obligations, opponents of the agreement will take it as proof the agreement is a sham. “If the West does not lift the sanctions, or, worse, should the US Congress or another country actually impose greater sanctions during this six-month period, it will be a clear sign that the West is not interested in a negotiated deal and that the United states has not distanced itself from a policy of regime change. The most important thing both sides should do now is convince the world that this deal is credible… Otherwise, the voices of the skeptics and opponents of the deal will rise above those wanting it to work.”

They say that if Iran hedges or is caught cheating, the UN Security Council will likely authorize military action against it. If the West does not meet its obligations, Iran will “likely begin a confrontational foreign policy against the United States and the West.”

They also warn of disaster if no permanent agreement is reached within the six-month interim period. “Indeed, if a permanent deal cannot be reached, it is quite likely that the crisis six months from now will be intense and explosive, and the opponents of the interim deal will be vindicated.”
