Hersh: Syrian Rebels Use of Sarin Gas Was Covered-up; White House “Cherry-Picked Intelligence" to Go to War!

– - Hersh: Syrian Rebels Use of Sarin Gas Was Covered-up; White House “Cherry-picked Intelligence” to Go to War!

Seymour Hersh, the internationally known investigative reporter and author accuses the Obama Administration of having “cherry picked intelligence” reports all {after the fact} in claiming that the Bashar al Assad government in Syria had killed more than 1400 of its own citizens in a sarin gas attack that occurred in Ghouta on August 21. Not only does Hersh cite public sources as well as discussions with former and current military and intelligence officials, but he points to to a four-page cable that was sent in June 2013 to Deputy Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) documenting that the Saudi-backed jihadist organization Jubhat al-Nusra, the official organization of Al Qaeda in Syria, had the ability to manufacture sarin.

In a 5000-plus word article called “Whose Sarin?” published Dec. 9th in the London Review of Books, Hersh says–in direct contradiction of White House statements from Obama and top administration officials–that al-Nusra had “mastered the mechanics of creating sarin and was capable of manufacturing it in quantity.” And one important fact about the story: both the Washington Post and Hersh’s former base publication, The New Yorker, refused to accept it.
–
In a direct hit on Obama, Hersh writes that Obama “did not tell the whole story…”when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack on 21 August. “In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts,”Hersh writes. “Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded —without assessing responsibility— had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack, the American intelligence agencies produced a series of highly classified reports… citing evidence that the al-Nusra Front, a jihadi group affiliated with al-Qaida, had mastered the mechanics of creating sarin and was capable of manufacturing it in quantity. When the attack occurred, al-Nusra should have been a suspect, but the administration cherry-picked intelligence to justify a strike against Assad.”
–
The White House immediately denounced the Hersh story as false, and in a statement that is reminiscent of Susan Rice’s lies about Benghazi in September 2012, the spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Shawn Turner (who is quoted in the Hersh article) insisted on Monday after the story came out: “The intelligence clearly indicated that the Assad regime and only the Assad regime could have been responsible for the 21 August chemical weapons attack. The suggestion that there was an effort to suppress intelligence about a nonexistent alternative explanation is simply false.”
–
One crucial piece of information that Hersh exposed is that “On 20 June, a four-page top secret cable summarising what had been learned about al-Nusra’s nerve gas capabilities was forwarded to David R. Shedd, Deputy Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.” Various administration officials claim they never saw it.
