  Joint statement by Jacques Cheminade, former French presidential candidate in 2012, and Bassam Tahhan, a Franco-Syrian Professor associated with the National Center for Scientific Research in France, and a specialist in geopolitics.

  December 24, 2012 — While the confrontation between the Western powers and Syria spirals out of control, and creates the conditions for a new world war,  because of the interplay among regional and international alliances, in our country, the horror of the war that threatens is nowhere to be found in the “news.” Thus, Frenchmen continue to attend to business as usual, just like the people in Breughel paintings, who are blinded to the fundamental changes which are about to determine their very existence.

  With the decision to deploy Patriot anti-missile missiles on the Turkish-Syrian border, the West has taken yet one more step down the slippery slope that can lead us to global confrontation. One need not be a great strategist to realize that there is no need to deploy Patriots supported by AWACS systems, if the purpose is merely to defend against sporadic artillery and mortar fire between the loyalist army of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian jihadists on the Turkish-Syrian border. Only the possibility of a generalized conflict with Syria, which has tens of thousands of missiles, but also with Iran, could justify the deployment of such systems, which actually aim at protecting Turkey and Israel.

  By implicating in the deployment of those systems three eminent members of NATO —  the United States, Germany and the Netherlands — the West has created the conditions where any attack on those systems would be theoretically considered as an attack against NATO itself, thus forcing the entire organization to counterattack under a broad interpretation of Article 5 of the Alliance.

  Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi was not off the mark when he denounced the deployment of the Patriots, on Dec. 16th, as being part of “plans for a world war,” devised by the “Western countries.” Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also called it a “provocation” with “incalculable” consequences.

  Other signs show the immediate willingness of the United Kingdom and of the United States to go for a confrontation, and to pull their allies into it, in particular the international propaganda around the so-called threat that the Syrian regime will use its chemical weapons. The disinformation, launched by an anonymous American source and later confirmed in a statement by Barack Obama itself, spread like wildfire on Dec. 3, that the Syrians were “beginning to mix their chemical precursors,” i.e., to prepare sarin gas for deployment. Since then, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has backtracked, stating that there were “no new elements indicating aggressive measures,” and French Defense Minister Jean-Yves LeDrian also stated in a TV interview, that the Syrian chemical weapons were “stockpiled and protected by the forces of Bashar al-Assad,” and that there was no sign he intended to use them.

  However, the heads of state and government of the major Western powers, including François Hollande,  have indicated that the use by Bashar al-Assad of chemical weapons would be considered as the “red line” for war,  thus creating the conditions for a global manipulation such as was orchestrated by Tony Blair and George Bush in 2003, claiming that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction in order to start the war against Iraq. Such a manipulation today threatens to drag the Western countries not only into a war against Syria, but also against Syria’s allies, Russia and China.

  While “Reason sleeps” in the trans-Atlantic countries struck by the worst financial crisis in history, the fear of losing power to the emerging Asian countries, has awakened, in the delirium of the Western oligarchy, the demons of war.

  In this situation, France —  a Gaullist and Republican France — must wake up, and make her voice heard, by leaving NATO if necessary and by calling for peace through development, from the Atlantic to the Sea of China. That is the only solution to our economic problems, the only solution to reestablish peace.
