AI Expert Raises Alarm Over US Nuclear Arsenal Moving Toward Digital Integration Amid Cyber Attack Risk
Tristan Harris worked at Google before devoting his life to saving humanity from AI. If half of what he says is true, we need to drop everything and fix this.

* The mechanical and analog electronic systems previously used to secure the U.S. nuclear arsenal (called Permissive Action Links) are being replaced by automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Talkshow host Tucker Carlson interviewed Google whistleblower Tristan Harris on the dangers of AI and social media addiction. During the discussion, released Monday, Harris raised the alarm about the U.S. government’s quest to “modernize” its nuclear weapon infrastructure, which includes increased reliance on digital systems amid the ongoing spat of AI hack attacks.
–
“So the U.S. is about to spend, I think it’s 1.7 trillion dollars, starting in 2017, the Trump administration…signed it to upgrade the nuclear arsenal,” Harris said around 1:01:00 into the interview.
–
He then explained how the old system to prevent unauthorized use of U.S. nuclear weapons was decentralized electromechanical, and was air-gapped, unable to be hacked. “And the new system, they’re going to be digitally networked,” he said. “They’re going to be connected to modern networking infrastructure.”
–
Harris went on to mention AI’s advanced hacking capabilities, and how digitally-connected nuclear weapons make for a potential method AI could use to exterminate humanity.
–
“If I’m now digitally networking my nuclear weapons, and I suddenly have an AI that can turn off your nukes or do the opposite, that’s, don’t have to say more, that’s a very unsafe world,” he said.
