  The Scandinavian state’s government signed a contract last Tuesday with private companies to start storing grain products.

  The initial contract will cover the storage of 30,000 tonnes of grain, Agriculture and Food Minister Geir Pollestad told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. The goal is to store around 82,500 tonnes of grain by the end of the decade, ensuring a sufficient supply for three months of consumption for Norway’s population in any possible crisis, NRK quoted Pollestad as saying.

  This food is estimated to be enough to feed over 5 million citizens for three months in the event of an emergency (perhaps a world war). Polestad stressed that the security situation has deteriorated significantly in the region, prompting the government to focus on strengthening preparedness.

  It is assumed that similar actions have already been taken in other European states in recent years, most of which, naturally, are not announced. “Food security is vital. We need to prepare for the unexpected and ensure access to food in such situations,” he said. Pollestad further explained that these contracts are scheduled to be implemented between 2024 and 2025, with a storage period of 25 years.
