Likely nomination of right-wing hardliners to the justice ministry could radicalize the state, officials say. Radical right-wingers taking over the justice portfolio could endanger the security of the civilian population, Israeli police officials talking to Hebrew-language media on the first day of Passover warned.

The likely candidates for the justice post are Bezalel Smotrich, from the Union of Right Wing Parties, and Yariv Levin, from Likud. Miri Regev, the current culture minister, is also an outside possibility. All three have been seriously involved in taking the judiciary to task, often labeling it as the home of a liberal elite, or calling it unpatriotic.

Smotrich, who is a settler and an activist in the settlement movement, is definitely ahead in the running for the position – and has already moved in the Knesset to try to create a new dynamic of oversight for the judiciary.

A bill he tabled earlier in the year would see supreme court decisions requiring parliamentary oversight, effectively breaking down the separation of power between the legislative and judicial arms of government.
–
“The two candidates undermine the foundations of our legal system and that of any other enlightened nation,” a retired Supreme Court judge who wished to remain anonymous told Israel’s Channel 12. “They want a legal system that will serve a political system.”
–
The police sources said that if the appointment would be carried out, there would be sacrifices on the Temple Mount at the next Passover.
