THE RUNDOWN | Hamas has resorted to violently cracking down on protests in Gaza, but could a war with Israel turn the tide and rally support for the political organization in the Strip? Former COGAT member Alon Eviatar and former Palestinian minister Ashraf Al-Ajrami discuss with hosts Nurit Ben and Calev Ben-David. Tamed protests come as the United Nations envoy for the Middle East addressed the Security Council on the recent flare-up, warning of catastrophic consequences from escalating violence as the Palestinian Hamas and Israel continue to exchange fire despite a reported ceasefire deal. Nikolay Mladenov told the UNSC that a ‘fragile calm’ had returned to the region on Tuesday, but the situation remained “extremely tense” following reports that Hamas had agreed to a truce. ‘I am concerned that we may once again be facing another very dangerous escalation of violence in Gaza with potentially catastrophic consequences,’ Mladenov told a council meeting on the Middle East.

A weekly protest dubbed ‘naval flotilla’ that normally takes place on the northern beaches of Zikim on Tuesday afternoon were postponed. ‘Night confusion’ units, groups of organized young men that burn tires, throw stones and makeshift explosives at the border fence, were also due to stay home, after vowing earlier in the week that they would increase their activities in advance of the one-year anniversary of the Great March of Return on Saturday.

Although neither protest is officially organized by Hamas, they are under the general control of Gaza’s rulers. Groups were launching explosive devices tied to balloons from Gaza into Israel, and the Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, released a video of it launching rockets into Israel the night before – so the gung-ho rhetoric was not entirely toned down. Israel had called up reservists on Monday, following a rocket attack launched from Gaza that injured seven in the central Israeli town of Mishmeret. The IDF moved two infantry and one tank brigades on Monday, but more troop movement were reported on Tuesday.
