    NASA chief Jim Bridenstine declared last week that “we are well on our way” to discovering alien life.

    The former Congressman said finding “life on another world” was a priority for the agency. He was speaking at an event held at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the agency’s centre for robot interplanetary missions. According to Space.com, Mr Bridenstine said: “We’re going to be looking at samples and determine if there’s a biosignature in there.

    “The goal is to discover life on another world; that’s what we’re trying to achieve. “And because of so many great people in this room, friends, we are well on our way to doing that.”

    Mr Bridenstine specifically pointed to Mars as being the focus point for investigation, highlighting three key finds. The first was that Mars’ surface hosts complex organic molecules, the building blocks of life.

    They also found that in some areas, the potentially biogenic gas methane varies seasonally. Finally, there seems to be a huge lake of liquid water beneath Mars’ south pole. The first two discoveries were made by NASA’s Curiosity rover and the first by Europe’s Mars Express orbiter. Mr Bridenstine emphasised that these do not mean life 100 percent exist on Mars, but they do increase the probability.
