ITALY’S Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio has demanded freedom from EU-imposed austerity as he lashes out at Brussels for controlling the country’s spending.

Mr Di Maio insisted all EU member states must have the same fiscal and welfare systems, after Italy was penalised with strict curbs on spending after being granted a bail out from its richer nations. Threatening turmoil for the eurozone, Mr Di Maio told Italian newspaper La Stampa today: “There are five million people in poverty. It is an absolute emergency.” He added: “In the next months the government’s attitude will be different from the past.

“We will move to obtain greater investments and the possibility of making structural reforms in the fiscal and welfare sectors.”

While he believes in the future of the EU, Mr Di Maio vowed Italy’s new populist government will create the same fiscal and welfare system model used in all EU states, despite the country’s burgeoning debt. Mr Di Maio added: “If I had a child, I would like him/her to grow on a continent where the tax and welfare systems were the same for everyone. We will work to get this.”

Mr Di Maio insisted Europe “has to listen to us because, unlike France and Germany Italy has a government supported by over 60% of our fellow citizens”. Italy’s debt burden stands at 130 percent of its economic output – the highest among major eurozone countries – while being the eurozone’s third largest economy.
