  SPANISH foreign minister Josep Borrell has urged European authorities to take back control of the Schengen area, and to “tackle” the issue of mass migration, ensuring the lack of border controls within the EU does not push the Schengen zone to “collapse”.

  Mr Borrell has demanded EU officials agree on a firm policy to maintain the influx of immigrants into Spanish border, effectively managing those who “do not get the right to stay”, and insisted the West must “effectively support economic development in African countries”.

  His comments come after Italy refused to accept a rescue boat of 630 African migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Libya since last Sunday. The Aquarius rescue boat, along with two dispatched Italian ships, made their four-day journey to Spain after the Spanish government agreed to take in the survivors.

  Mr Borrell told German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung: “We must quickly come to a concept in the EU countries of how we tackle the issue of mass migration in a uniform way.
