  FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron has launched a furious attack on Donald Trump, warning his decision to impose trade tariffs on the EU is illegal and could lead to war.

  The French leader will talk to US President Donald Trump on the subject later on Thursday, but that the decision on tariffs closes the door on other talks. But in a stunning outburst, Mr Macron claimed the US was responding to global imbalances with economic and commercial nationalism.

  He said: “This decision is not only unlawful but it is a mistake in many respects. “Economic nationalism leads to war.”

  The relationship between the two world leaders appeared to have blossomed when Mr Macron visited Washington last month. They put on public shows of affection, embracing in front of the world’s media on several occasions. But their relationship has soured over recent weeks, beginning with Mr Tump’s decision to withdraw the US from the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month.

  In a joint statement with Prime Minister Theresa May and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the French leader labelled Mr Trump’s decision a matter of “regret and concern” and would defy the US President in remaining committed to the deal.

  Meanwhile Canada, which will also be impacted by move, has also been quick to respond, with Foreign minister Chrystia Freeland announcing it will impose retaliatory measures against the US. It will impose its own tariffs that will cover C$16.6 billion in imports – some products will get 25 percent and others 10 percent.
