  ISRAEL has been accused of firing missiles at a military base in Syria in an attack that has moved the Middle East closer to the brink of war.

  Syrian air defences have intercepted and destroyed two Israeli missiles fired towards a base near Damascus, according to Syrian news agency SANA. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today an Israeli attack on military facilities south of Damascus had killed at least 15 people, including eight Iranians.

  Flames can be seen illuminating the night sky in dramatic pictures apparently taken at the site of the missile attack. Missiles were fired at Iranian military communications bases in al-Kiswah, around eight miles south of Damascus, Syria’s capital, Israeli media reports. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) refused to comment on claims it was behind the attack, saying: “We do not respond to such foreign reports.” No one was injured or killed in the attack, a military chief loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said.
