  THREE Russian missile armies made up of 10,000 troops have been ordered to go on the “highest combat alert” amid simmering tensions with the west.

  Vladimir Putin’s Strategic Missile Force will carry out large-scale “command and staff exercises” in the coming days, Russia’s Defence Ministry said today. Missile armies in regions across Russia, including Vladimir, near Moscow, Orenburg, near the Kazakhstan border and Omsk, in Siberia, will take part in the war drills. In co-ordinated exercises, Russian soldiers “will practice measures to go on the highest combat alert”, a spokesperson for the Defence Ministry said. Troops taking part in the drills, involving 1,000 pieces of combat hardware, will “bring missile regiments to the routes of combat patrols”.

  The announcement of the drills comes just 24 hours after at least 20 western countries kicked out more than 100 Russian diplomats over the nerve agent attack in the UK.

  The Kremlin branded the mass expulsions a “provocative gesture” that puts Russia and western nations on a “confrontational path”.

  Despite the heated furore over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, military action by Russia still remains an unlikely scenario. Nonetheless, defence experts believe Russia poses a “significant threat” to countries in eastern Europe, especially Baltic states such as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
