The first primates to be successfully cloned using somatic cell nuclear transfer, eight-week old Zhong Zhong and six-week old Hua Hua, were unveiled in Suzhou on Wednesday. The pair of long-tailed macaques can be seen frolicking in their incubator, unaware of the scientific milestone they represent. The Chinese Academy of Sciences carried out the cloning in order to further biological experimentation, given exact clones will provide more reliable data during testing. Dolly the Sheep became the first mammalian clone in 1996 when she was born in Scotland, with more than 20 other species undergoing the same process, including rabbits, cows and dogs. The cloning of monkeys, however, is also significant because of their genetic similarity with human beings.
