UKIP MEP Bill Etheridge mocked key European Union figures after it was finally revealed the bloc would pursue an EU army.–
The EU’s leaders have dropped any pretence that it was not interested in having an integrated military strategy after unveiling plans for a Brussels-led force. Mr Etheridge, Ukip’s defence spokesman, claimed he must be “hallucinating” after having listened to EU officials denying they were planning an EU army for over a year. The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has addressed the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, setting out the EU’s policy, saying there is a “genuine European way in security and defence”.

The Italian politician said: “There is a need to have an integrated approach, responding to crisis and conflicts. “Using all different tools from diplomatic to humanitarian, economic and cultural. “There is a genuine European way in security and defence. It is made up of civilian and military means together – hard and soft power together.”

Addressing the EU Parliament after Ms Mogherini’s announcement, Mr Etheridge said: “Well, I think after this I’m going to have to report to the doctors because I think I’m having a hallucination. “I think I must be having a fantasy because I’m sure I saw Madame Mogherini saying that there was going to be a huge defence spending, EU armed forces and battlegroups.

“Now, during the referendum campaign in the UK, Remain told us this was a fantasy, no such thing couldn’t possibly be true – they couldn’t have been lying, so I must be dreaming.
