Tensions between the US and Russia have not been so critical since the end of the Cold War. US forces shooting down a Su-22 Syrian fighter jet was the first direct engagement between US and Syrian air forces since the beginning of the country’s civil war. The jet was en route to fight Islamic State militants near Raqqa, capital of the self-proclaimed caliphate. The Trump administration’s goals in Syria are confusing, even to experts.
