Russia slams the latest U-S statement on Syria saying it is tantamount to supporting terrorism. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov says Moscow is outraged by the threatening tone of the U-S statement. Ryabkov described it as an emotional outburst. A US State Department spokesman has said Russia has an interest in stopping the violence in Syria because extremists could exploit the vacuum there and launch attacks against Russian interests, perhaps even Russian cities. Moscow also rejected as unacceptable a seven-day ceasefire plan proposed for Syria by the United States. Moscow said the terrorists would use the truce to re-group. It instead proposed a 48-hour humanitarian pause in the city of Aleppo, which has seen some of the heaviest fighting in the history of the five-year conflict. Aleppo has been divided roughly in two since 2012, with the Syrian government controlling the west and terrorist factions the east.
