JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker slotted another piece of the EU superstate jigsaw into place today with the creation of a scheme to imbue European youths with Brussels values.

The EU chief announced the founding of a European Solidarity Corps (ESC), to be run entirely by Brussels bureaucrats, which will allow unemployed youngsters to volunteer for civic projects across the continent. But critics today branded the scheme a “waste of taxpayers’ money” and said it was part of a drive to eradicate national sovereignty in favour of the creation of a United States of Europe.

One supporter of the plan even openly admitted that he hoped the ESC would make European youngsters “proud of the flag” of the fledgling European superstate, rather than those of their own countries. The scheme is set to closely mirror the world-famous US Peace Corps, which helps millions of young Americans volunteer on social and charity projects at home and abroad. The US programme is credited with imbuing a sense of civic responsibility within young Americans and helps reinforce shared cultural values across the United States.

Proponents of an EU superstate, including the new Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt, have repeatedly stated that Europe should create a political structure similar to that of the US, with its capital in Brussels.

And announcing the creation of the ESC today, Mr Juncker said he wanted it set up “as soon as possible” so that 100,000 European youngsters could be taking part by 2020. He added: “These young people will be able to develop their skills and not only get work but also an invaluable human experience.”
