China says its relations with the Philippines are at a new turning point, calling on Manila to handle disputes appropriately. China’s Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin has expressed hope about improving relations with the Philippines. Liu has told a Filipino delegation in Beijing that his country hopes the Philippines can push relations back onto the track of dialogue, consultation and friendly cooperation. The two sides have been involved in a bitter territorial dispute in the South China Sea. Manila lays claim to a territory about 160 kilometers from its shore in the South China Sea, but Beijing claims ownership of almost the entire waterway. Back in July, an arbitration court in The Hague denied China’s claims to sovereignty in the waterway, backing a case brought by the Philippines.
