  THE EU is refusing to stop ploughing on with a controversial trade deal with America described as ‘de facto’ dead by Germany.

  The lucrative TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) deal with the US looks to be teetering on the brink of collapse after talks first began several years ago. The bloc’s 28 members unanimously voted to finalise the negotiations with the US, a day after German officials branded the deal a failure.

  TTIP is a bi-lateral trade agreement aimed at removing barriers for big business to trade between US and the EU, such as in banking, environmental legislation and food safety law. The country’s economy minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said the talks had “de facto failed” due to Europe rejecting some of USA’s demands.

  And fellow politician, foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, echoed the sentiment saying both parties were still “far away” from reaching an agreement. He compared the high-quality standards the EU enjoyed when working out a separate deal with Canada with the current situation.

  Key differences remain over food and environmental safety, with critics warning the deal will hand too much power to multi-nationals. EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas maintained the agreement would be ready by the end of year, but not at the expense of “Europe’s safety, health, social and data protection standards, or our cultural diversity”.
