1. Elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, September 4 and 18
Germany is facing two key local elections at a time when the country is reeling from a horrifying week of bloody terror attacks, some of which were linked to recently arrived asylum seekers. Voters will go to the polls in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on Germany’s north coast, and in the capital Berlin and could give Angela Merkel a kicking over her open door immigration policy. The under-fire German leader recently affirmed her commitment to taking in unlimited numbers of migrants despite growing public concern over the twin threat of sex attacks and Islamist extremism. And according to the latest polls that could play into the hands of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has enjoyed a surge in support and scored 24 per cent of the vote during elections in Saxony-Anhalt in March.
