Turkey’s interior ministry says it has sacked almost 9000 officials after Friday’s failed coup attempt against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the ministry, those dismissed include 7900 police forces, one provincial governor and 29 governors of towns. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says more than 7500 suspects involved in the coup plot have been detained so far. He also revised down the coup’s death toll, putting the number of those killed at 232. The government had earlier said at least 294 people died in the violence. The coup was launched on Friday evening by a faction of the armed forces who aimed to seize control of the country. Erdogan has blamed the attempt to topple him on the supporters of US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen. The cleric denies any involvement in the military uprising.
