Russia has accused the US of seeking to build up its military presence in the Korean peninsula by deploying missile systems to the region. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the remarks during a meeting with Mongolian, Japanese and Chinese journalists in Moscow. He also echoed Russia and China’s concerns over the possible US missile deployments, warning that this could jeopardize the security of both nations. Lavrov described US deployments as “a violation of strategic stability”. The top Russian diplomat further called for measures to calm down the situation in the region. Pyongyang’s recent missile launches and nuclear tests as well as joint military drills by the US and South Korea have further exacerbated the already tense situation in the region.
