  The US and the Philippines have begun joint war games as China is mounting criticism of Washington’s growing military presence in East Asia. The military exercises involve thousands of troops from both countries as well as forces from Australia, Japan and Vietnam. The Philippines and Vietnam are locked in sovereignty disputes with Beijing in the South China Sea. The Philippines says the drills are not aimed against China. But the top US regional commander notes that a potential crisis in the South China Sea is part of the planning. This as protesters rallied outside the US embassy in the Philippines’ capital Manila to condemn the exercises.
