China’s foreign ministry says the missile defense system the US plans to deploy in South Korea is a threat to regional stability. The US Deputy Secretary has said that he hopes Beijing would accept an offer for a technical briefing on the issue. On Tuesday, Anthony Blinken said the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, THAAD system is necessary for the US to protect itself and regional allies from North Korean missile attacks. Talks on the possible deployment of the THAAD system started between the US and South Korea last month following a fourth nuclear test by North Korea in January. U-S President Barack Obama is expected to meet his South Korean counterpart and the Japanese prime minister in Washington on Thursday to discuss North Korea’s nuclear program.
