Putin Warns Turkey’s Downing of Russian Jet Will Have Serious Consequences

  Russia has warned that Turkey’s downing of its fighter jet on the border with Syria will have serious consequences for ties between Moscow and Ankara. President Vladimir Putin said the move was a stab in the back delivered by terrorist accomplices. The Russian president stressed that the plane was downed above Syrian territory with an air-to-air missile fired by a Turkish plane although it did not pose a threat to Turkey. He also said large amounts of oil from anti-Damascus militants in Syria go to Turkey. The Russian Defense Ministry has summoned Turkish defense attaché in Moscow. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has also summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Ankara has the right to all kinds of measures against border violations. NATO ambassadors will hold a special session later on Tuesday to discuss the situation.
