Planning for the exercises had taken place over two years. The preliminary stages of the drills are being held in the fictitious country of Sorotan on Saturday. The live part is scheduled for October 21 to November 6 in Italy, Portugal, Spain and at sea in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. More than 36-thousand soldiers and civilians are expected to take part in the war games. Many see the large exercises as the military alliance’s show of power to Russia. But NATO leaders reject the claim, saying the war games are only aimed at boosting the alliance’s response capacity to any challenge.
