If the proposal is approved, it is the first time since the end of the Cold War that Washington stations heavy military equipment in newer NATO members. The move needs the approval of the White House and US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. This comes amid tensions between Russia and NATO over the crisis in Ukraine. For months, Ukraine and Western governments have accused Russia of arming militia groups in eastern Ukraine and deploying troops there. Russia has repeatedly rejected any involvement in the crisis.

The United States and Poland are discussing possible deployment of American heavy weaponry in Eastern Europe in response to what they call Russia’s threats. The Polish Defense Ministry says Washington and Warsaw are in talks about permanent stationing of US battle tanks and other heavy weaponry in Poland. The ministry said the move is aimed at deterring Moscow’s attempts to destabilize former Soviet nations. Tensions between Russia, the United States and its NATO allies have grown in the last year over the crisis in Ukraine. Washington and its allies accuse the Kremlin of expansionism and trying to dominate Eastern Europe. Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations.
