  Russia’s parliament speaker has accused Ukraine’s Western-backed interim government of committing genocide in the country.
  –
  During a two-day visit to Serbia on Tuesday, Russia’s Parliament Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said, “A punitive operation is ongoing against the people who demand the protection of human rights and the federalization of the country (Ukraine).”
  –
  “We face a true genocide of Russian and Ukrainian people already in the 21st century,” Naryshkin added.
  –
  Since May 2, Ukraine’s army has stepped up its offensive against pro-Russia protesters in the eastern regions of the country, killing and injuring scores of people there. On May 2, 36 people died as a result of the fire in the trade union building in Odessa, Ukraine’ third-largest city.

  On May 6, a military assault on Ukraine’s eastern city of Slavyansk left over 30 pro-Russia protesters dead. Pro-Moscow protesters continue to occupy a number of government, police and other administrative buildings in many cities and towns in the region, demanding integration into neighboring Russia.

  Earlier in the day, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said holding a presidential election in Ukraine would be unusual at the time when Kiev has deployed troops against civilians.

  He also dismissed a European proposal to hold fresh peace talks on Ukraine and labeled it “pointless”.

  On April 23, Ukraine’s acting government re-launched its military operation in the eastern and southern regions in a bid to root out the pro-Russia demonstrations.

  The military operation came despite an April 17 Geneva agreement signed by Kiev’s interim government together with the United States, Russia and the European Union, calling for all sides to ease crisis in eastern Ukraine.
