U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Daniel Russel Thursday openly threatened sanctions and military action against China in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, comparing China’s intentions with Putin’s supposed intentions in Europe. Russel claimed that China is “increasingly threatening force or other forms of coercion to advance their territorial interests,” and warned China: “The prospect of the kind of incremental retaliatory steps that are gradually being imposed on Russia in terms of its banks, in terms of cronies and other areas should have a chilling effect on anyone in China who might contemplate the Crimea annexation as a model.”

Reuters, under the title “U.S. warns China not to try Crimea-style action in Asia,” reported that Russel termed the deployment of large numbers of Chinese vessels in its dispute with the Philippines in the South China Sea to be “problematic” and said that Beijing had taken “what to us appears to be intimidating steps.” He praised the Philippines for filing a case with the Arbitration board under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea over the island disputes, despite the fact that the rules of UNCLOS require both sides to agree to such arbitration−which China adamantly refuses to do, insisting on bilateral negotiations, which the Philippines refuses, under Obama’s direction.

With the military aspect of the Obama threats to Russia clear to to world, and in the context of multiple terrorist and “regime change” operations already afoot across Asia, including within China itself (Taiwan and the Uighur terrorists), Russel’s threats to China must be taken seriously, as China does. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, asked about Russel’s comments at his daily briefing, said: “No matter whether the Ukraine issue or the South China Sea issue, China has many times expressed its position. Why must this U.S. official mention the two issues in the same breath, and obstinately say these things about China?”

At the same time, the Financial Times’ associate editor Philip Stephens (who authored a biography of Tony Blair), wrote in the FT on Thursday that “Beyond economic strength and military prowess, one of the precious ingredients in great power relations is credibility. Allies and adversaries should know that you mean what you say. Nowhere is this truer than in east Asia. Barack Obama might bear the thought in mind when he carries the American flag around the region later this month.” That he means the open threat of military action is not hidden: “Russia’s march into Crimea has raised questions as to where the west would draw the line. Would NATO go to war over the Baltic states? Much the same is asked in east Asia: would Mr Obama fight China over a bunch of rocks in the East China Sea? The more credibly the US and its allies can answer yes to both questions, the less likely their resolve will be tested.”

These threats reflect the war-cry issued two weeks ago by another leading Commonwealth spokesman for war, Australia’s Hugh White, who wrote in the NY Times on March 19 that China must give up even the threat of force, or face direct military action by the the dumb giant, the US. White called on Obama to forge a new security arrangement in the Pacific, “including the all-important norm against the use or threat of force to settle disputes…. America should be willing to fight China to protect that norm…. If China persists in threatening the use of force, then America should be willing to fight, and must say so clearly.”
–
Note that China has always reserved the right to use force to protect its territory, especially in the case of a separatist movement in Taiwan, as is indeed taking place right now, with the western NGO-backed occupation of the legislature demanding a break with China.

White had written in The Age, just the day before his China war threat in the NY Times, that “President Vladimir Putin has defied the principles of international order on which post-Cold-War Europe was supposed to be built,” and that Europe must “draw the line beyond which they will not allow Russia to use force to build its influence…. Drawing that line means deciding to fight the Russians if they cross it.”
