Ukraine’s acting president has asked the parliament to approve a set of military exercises with NATO. This could put American troops in direct proximity with Russian forces in Crimea.
Oleksandr Turchynov said Ukraine was willing to conduct two sets of joint military drills with the US in the summer. He added that Kiev also plans an additional exercise with NATO member Poland, as well as a joint ground operation with Moldova and Romania. The president’s request comes as the chief of Russia’s general staff said his forces are now in complete control of the one-hundred 93 Ukrainian military bases in the Black Sea region of Crimea.
