NATO’s defense ministers demonstrated, in full view of the world, today, Bertrand Russell’s principle that snow is actually black, by declaring that
–
“A sovereign, independent and stable Ukraine, firmly committed to democracy and the rule of law, is key to Euro-Atlantic security,” at their two-day meeting which concluded in Brussels, today.
–
In the view of NATO, therefore, the Nazi regime which just took over in Kiev must be “democratic” or they wouldn’t be issuing statements in support of it and warning Russia against any move against Ukraine, as they did today. Not only did the defense ministers vow to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but the new regime participated in the NATO meeting.
–
“I was pleased to welcome Ukraine’s participation in the ministerial,” said US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, during a press conference at the conclusion of today’s meeting. “And today I affirmed America’s strong support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
–
And Hagel left no doubt that the statement was aimed squarely at Russia.
–
“We expect other nations to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and avoid provocative actions,” he said. “That’s why I’m closely watching Russia’s military exercises along the Ukrainian border.”
–
The Fogh of War
“Ukraine is a close and long-standing partner to NATO. And NATO is a sincere friend of Ukraine,” added NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen. “We stand ready to continue assisting Ukraine in its democratic reforms.”
–
The exercises Hagel referred to are snap exercises of the Western and Central military districts that also involve the Baltic and Northern Fleets as well as airborne and air defense troops that Putin ordered, yesterday.
–
“The Supreme Commander-in-Chief has set tasks to check capability of troops to take actions to settle crisis situations that pose a threat to military security of the country as well as terrorism-related, sanitary epidemiological and man-made emergencies,”
–
said Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting at the Defense Ministry, yesterday, reported Itar-Tass. Shoigu said that the exercise didn’t have anything to do with the Ukraine crisis in particular.
–
“We do not relate these things in any way,” he said. “The exercise will take place on Russias border with other countries as well, and Ukraine may be among them.”
–
A total of 110,000 troops are participating in the exercise.
–
“Ninety aircraft, over 110 helicopters, up to 880 tanks, over 1,200 pieces of military hardware and as many as 80 ships and vessels will be involved,” the minister said.
–
The Black Sea Fleet, from its base in Sevastopol does not appear to be involved, but that didn’t stop Ukraine’s usurper president Turchynov from warning that any movement of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet personnel in the Crimea will be interpreted as military aggression against Ukraine. The Russians, however, are taking measures to insure the security of their military installations in the Crimea.
–
“We are carefully watching what is happening in Crimea, what is happening around the Black Sea Fleet,”
–
RIA Novosti reported Shoigu as saying.
–
“We are taking measures to guarantee the safety of facilities, infrastructure and arsenals of the Black Sea Fleet.”
