  Britain’s top Middle East agents, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his sidekick, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, are preparing a major ground assault against the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Benny Gantz has already ordered 16,000 reservists to be called up. Barak, who appears to want to start a broader war in the region, wanted to call up twice that number, but Gantz refused.

  Today, day three of Netanyahu’s new war, saw 250 targets in Gaza hit overnight. This morning, Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil was in the Gaza Strip, which borders Egypt,  for a three-hour visit to show support for the Palestinians. He will explore the possibility of brokering a ceasefire. It is not clear whether Israel is holding its fire during the visit.

  Speaking in Gaza, Kandil said, “This tragedy cannot pass in silence, and the world should take responsibility in stopping this aggression,” and urged Israel “to abide by its commitments.” He further stated that “Egypt is acting in multiple arenas to put an end to the aggression, bring peace and establish a Palestinian state.”

  News agency Ynet’s security commentator, Ron Ben-Yishai, wrote that the goal of the Israelis is to come to a new ceasefire agreement, under which rocket attacks into Israel and along the fence would cease, in an agreement guaranteed by the Egyptians. If that is not accepted, then Israel will launch a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

  Over the Nov. 17-18 weekend, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make a high-profile official visit to Egypt, which was planned before this flare-up in Gaza. Now Gaza, and not Syria, will dominate discussions with the Egyptians, according to the Turkish press.

  In Washington, Obama’s Deputy National Security Adviser, Ben Rhodes, put the blame for the Gaza conflict fully on Hamas, saying that “the onus is on Hamas to stop its rocket attacks.” He called on Europe, Egypt, and Turkey to pressure Hamas to stop.

  This conflict is occurring in the middle of an Israeli election campaign, in which the opposition sees itself having no choice but to support the operation. Nonetheless, a debate is going on already on whether a ground offensive should be carried out. According to Ynet, former Israel Air Force Chief Brig. Gen. (Res.) Ran Pecker said that he opposed a ground operation in the Gaza Strip: “Until now we haven’t targeted or hit innocents. There is a great deal of precision, and you can hit certain targets as well as preventing losses [to our forces]. We need to understand that the price will be high. Very high. Fighting in an urban area has a high price.”
