Following the collapse of the Eid al-Adha temporary cease-fire in Syria, UN and Arab League special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi was in Moscow on Oct. 29 and met with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “The situation is bad and getting worse,” Brahimi said, adding that there was no immediate plan to send UN peacekeepers to Syria.

Sergei Lavrov stressed the Syrian conflict was escalating and urged all foreign players to press the forces in Syria to bring them to the negotiating table. His meeting with Brahimi today was to seek new ways of settling the conflict, Voice of Russia said. The Russian foreign chief said the consultation was very fruitful, adding Russia has backed Brahimi and his team in their peace initiative.

Brahimi, in his turn urged to classify bombings of Syrian residential quarters as terror attacks, conducted by groupings who the mission has no contact with, and stressed they were highly condemnable. He also acknowledged Syria was in a state of civil war, adding the government was claiming it was fighting terrorists and its duty was to protect the citizens, while the other side argues it’s combatting a bloodthirsty regime.

Last Friday, Oct. 26, the warring factions were to conclude a cease-fire for the celebration of the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday, in keeping with Brahimi’s proposal. But opposition rebels set off a bomb in Damascus on the very first feast day, which sparked fighting that went on unabated throughout the weekend, Voice of Russia noted. Militants also attempted a counteroffensive in Aleppo yesterday. According to the Syrian military, the rebels never thought of ending fire.
