Syrian ground defences repelled Israeli missile attacks on the central and southern regions of the country on Thursday, according to state media and a military source. In the early hours, Israeli military planes fired several missiles from over Lebanese airspace towards the central area of Syria, the state-run Syrian news agency (SANA) cited a military source as saying.

“Enemy missiles were immediately dealt with, preventing any of them from reaching their targets,” the source said, according to SANA. The source did not specify which area was targeted in the central sector of Syria. Local sources told dpa that loud explosions were heard in the south-east of the city of Homs.

Israeli missiles also targeted areas in the south-western countryside of Quneitra, in southern Syria, a Syrian military source said. He added that ground defence confronted the attack. Israeli planes were also heard in some areas near the Lebanese southern coast. Last month a senior Hezbollah official in Syria was killed in an Israeli drone strike, Syrian opposition media report.
