In October 2011, following weeks of intense seismic activity, an underwater volcano erupted off the coast of El Hierro in Spain’s Canary Islands. Ten years later, the nearby island of La Palma appears to be facing the same situation. In the past few days, more than 5,400 tremors have been recorded.

A mega-tsunami has been ruled out. Nonetheless, the risk of a possible eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano remains elevated. This is why the Volcano Risk Prevention Plan (Pevolca) has decided to elevate the volcanic eruption risk to yellow – the second-highest. Moreover, yesterday, they presented an evacuation plan for 5 municipalities around the volcano.
