The Popular Mobilisation Forces are an umbrella grouping of mostly Shia militias. The group consists of around 40 militias which include some Sunni, Christian and Yazidi factions. It was formed in 2014 and has fought in several major battles against ISIS.

Former Saudi Foreign Minister Adel ul-Jubeir has described the group as a “religious organisation”, and accused it of carrying out killings in the country with the backing of generals in Tehran.
–
The group itself say the strike hit medics and not fighters or senior leaders. A statement alleged: “Initial sources confirm that the strike targeted a convoy of Popular Mobilisation Forces medics near Taji stadium in Baghdad.”
–
The event comes after the death of Qassam Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, near Baghdad International Airport. Missiles were shot from American drones targeting his convoy.
