WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney believes the U.S. will face another terrorist attack in this decade and that it will be worse than 9/11.
–
“I think there will be another attack. And next time, I think it’s likely to be far deadlier than the last one,” Cheney told “The Hugh Hewitt Show” Tuesday. “You can just imagine what would happen if somebody could smuggle a nuclear device, put it in a shipping container, and drive it down the Beltway outside of Washington, D.C.”
–
Hewitt then asked Cheney if there would be military rule if a nuclear attack did happen. The former vice president responded by saying he was part of a program during the Cold War called the “continuity of government program” in case the Soviet Union launched nuclear weapons against the U.S.
–
“It was part of the Cold War strategy that we pursued here, and basically it involved having a government waiting, if you will, ready to go in the event of a nuclear attack on the United States, so that we could always maintain the constitutional base of government authority,” Cheney explained on the radio program. “It was very, very important, and we operated and actually trained under circumstances of how would we go about making, providing for a government to survive if … we’re having nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union falling all over the country.”

Cheney has gone on the offensive against the Obama administration since violence in Iraq escalated due to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria taking control of two major Iraqi cities over the past couple of weeks. Cheney told Hewitt’s radio show that President Barack Obama’s foreign policy is not stopping terrorism around the globe.
–
“The thing that’s striking about it, and everybody’s sort of been focused in on Iraq, is how widespread this problem is,” Cheney said, referencing terrorism. “And one of the things I’ve always been amazed by is the extent to which this administration has gone out of its way to claim the problem was solved because they got (Osama) bin Laden, or they keep talking about al Qaeda’s been decimated, the only thing left is (Ayman) al-Zawahiri, and he’s on his last legs kind of thing, when in reality … it’s a bigger problem than ever.”
–
Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, Cheney said the U.S. needs to be realistic about the threat of Sunni insurgents in Iraq, citing a Rand Corp study that found that the number of jihadist terrorist groups have increased from North Africa to the Mideast.
–
“I think it’s very important to emphasize that the problem we’re faced with is a much broader one,” Cheney told “This Week.” “We need an administration to recognize the fact that we’ve got this huge problem, quit peddling the notion that they got core al Qaeda and therefore there’s no problem out there.”
–
The former vice president, along with his daughter Liz Cheney, launched The Alliance for a Strong America in an effort to advocate for national security and defense policies.
