Al-Nakhala said that, despite efforts by Israel, Ramallah, Gaza-based Palestinian factions remained united. Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ziad al-Nakhala said that attempts to demilitarize the Gaza Strip and disarm the Palestinian factions would lead to a war this summer.

“What happened in Gaza is a live exercise in preparation for the great battle that we see as inevitable,” al-Nakhala said. In an interview with Lebanon’s Al Miyadeen news channel, the Palestinian leader also said his organization was only a few hours away from “launching a rocket on Tel Aviv” before the ceasefire was implemented.

Al-Nakhala said the relationship between Hamas and Islamic Jihad was strong despite Israel, and the Palestinian Authority, attempting to weaken the Gaza-based Palestinian factions’ unity.

Israel and Ramallah have both attempted to drive a wedge between Hamas, which has established itself as a serious contender for political power on the Palestinian street, and Islamic Jihad, a more militant movement with a close relationship to Iran.
