GERMANY’S finance minister Olaf Scholz has announced a plot that would see the European Union gain a seat on the UN Security Council.
–
Mr Scholz said he wants to turn France’s seat on the peacekeeping organisation into a rotating seat for EU members. When Britain leaves the EU France will be its only permanent member of the UN Security Council. China, the United States and Russia, are the other three permanent members. Membership also consists of 10 non-permanent members elected for two year-terms.

But permanent membership gives the power to veto the UN’s decisions and authorise the use of force. Mr Scholz said national governments need to work closer together on defence spending.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced his desire for an EU army earlier this month, in plans backed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Announcing the plans, Mr Macron said: “I believe in a project of a sovereign Europe, a powerful Europe.
–
“We won’t protect Europeans if we don’t settle on having a real European Army. Against Russia, which stands at our border and has shown it can be a threat, I want to build a real debate on security with Russia, which is a country I respect, which is European.”
–
“We must have a Europe that defends itself by itself and does not just depend on the United States – and more sovereign. I am lucid. We are living in a Europe fractured by the rise of nationalism. We are in need of a stronger Europe, to not let history repeat itself.”
–
He said the EU needed to build its force against the threat of China, Russia and the United States.
–
He was supported by German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said: “Jean Claude Juncker some years ago said a common European Army would show the world there will never again be a war in Europe.
