  EUROPEAN Union leaders were entangled in a nine-hour tussle over the bloc’s migration policy which descended into a bizarre exchange over their former careers as talks entered the early hours of the morning – which resulted in a fudge highlighting the madness of EU bureaucracy.

  Italy were behind the monstrous delays as Rome’s new Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte flexed his muscles during his first major European Council summit in Brussels. Starting earlier in the day he blocked conclusions on enlargement, security and defence before the meet-up’s biggest issue, migration, reached the table.

  One EU diplomat said the Italians had “put a knife to the throat” of their European counterparts in an intense display of posturing as they strived to secure a migration deal that believe respects Rome’s new stance. As the all-night talks entered the early hours, a bizarre exchange broke out between the Italians, Swedes and Bulgarians during a disagreement over the EU’s working model.
