NIGEL FARAGE has warned the “unelected Germans” who tried to tell the Italian electorate what to do now face the break-up of the European Union, following the formation of the new anti-establishment coalition.
Nigel Farage predicted a long battle between the new Italian government and Jean-Claude Juncker’s European Commission that could spell the end of the European project. Italy’s new anti-establishment government took power on Friday and members of the cabinet have already outlined key battle lines with the EU elites. Government representatives have promised an end to EU-driven austerity and a harder line on relations with Brussels, especially on immigration and the role of the euro.
Mr Farage told Fox Business that the European Commission will ultimately regret trying to thwart the democracy of Italy by warning against a eurosceptic finance minister. The Brexiteer MEP hit back at claims that the Italians were “talking economic nonsense,” saying: “There is a bigger, more fundamental point than that.
“Whether pushing their deficit up massively through getting rid of the pension reforms, whether economically that makes sense, do people not have the right democratically to choose the government with their policies. “This is the clash. The real argument here is not economics, the real argument here is the Italian people elected this new government, commanding over 50 percent of the vote and they are being told by unelected Germans you can’t do this. “Ultimately this about democracy.”
