JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker has dismissed fears of a sovereign debt crisis taking over the eurozone, following widespread concerns surrounding on the formation of Italy’s anti-establishment coalition government on Friday.
Mr Juncker reassured the public that the eurozone would not be affected, despite the anti-establishment 5-star Movement and right-wing nationalist Lega’s power grab in Italy.
Speculation is rife the alliance will seek to leave the euro and bring back the lira, while there is also growing anticipation the government will scrap austerity measures. In an interview with German newspaper agency RND, Mr Juncker was asked if the EU would face a potential eurozone crisis, and he responded: “No. The reactions of the financial markets are irrational.
