Afghanistan IraqSyria “a little longer,” the Pentagon said on Thursday of US troop presence in the war torn country after a fierce debate within the administration was triggered last week over President Trump’s announcement that he intended to order a quick withdrawal of US forces.
Or rather, perhaps it was more of an establishment beltway “pile on” in reaction to Trump’s policy shift than a debate.
The U.S. military policy toward fighting Islamic State militants in Syria remains the same following discussions with President Donald Trump this week and the military has not been given a timeline for withdrawing troops, the Pentagon said on Thursday.
Trump agreed in a National Security Council meeting this week to keep U.S. troops in Syria a little longer to defeat Islamic State but wants them out relatively soon, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.
There are some 2000+ officially acknowledged soldiers occupying northern Syria working closely with the Kurdish YPG-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Trump’s message even as recently as Tuesday was a firm and confident, “It is time” to get out of Syria, “I want to bring our troops home.”
