BRUSSELS will power ahead with Jean-Claude Juncker’s dream of creating a “fully fledged European Defence Union” by 2025 with the unveiling of military mobility plans today.
Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc is expected to urge EU Member States to increase “military mobility” to pave the way for the superstate’s army. A draft of the document seen by Politico said: “Improving military mobility in the European Union is one of the practical steps to that end.”
Last year Brussels put into motion plans for an EU Army after 23 states signed off on a key military agreement in November – a move a high-ranking eurocrat hailed as a “historic day”. At the time, one unnamed official quoted by Reuters news agency said: “We’ve never come this far before. We are in a new situation.” Federica Mogherini the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security said: “It’s going to be quite a historic day today for European defence.”
