Tensions are running high in Kashmir following the death of three Pakistani soldiers during cross-border shelling in the disputed region. In a statement, the Pakistani army said the soldiers were killed after they came under fire on the Pakistani side of the border. The statement blamed India for what it described as New Delhi’s unprovoked ceasefire violation. There has been no comment from India following the incident. The Muslim-majority Himalayan region has been a flashpoint area since the subcontinent was divided by Britain in 1947. Thousands of people have lost their lives in the Kashmir violence since 1989.
