- NATO Chief Slams EU Bureaucrat Juncker for EU Army: ‘Don’t Duplicate NATO’
BRITAIN’S top soldier yesterday warned EU bureaucrats not to “duplicate” Nato.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach – who becomes Nato’s top military officer next year – spoke out after European Commission president Jean-Claude Junker pushed for an EU defence force. Mr Juncker said: “By 2025 we need a fully fledged European defence union. We need it and Nato wants it.”
But yesterday Sir Stuart, chief of the Defence Staff and soon to be chairman of Nato’s Military Committee, said the 29-nation transatlantic alliance must not be undermined. Asked if the EU’s plans pose a threat to Nato, he said: “Nato is… a hard power. It has divisions, it has cores, it has aircraft, it has ships, it has submarines. “It has a proper sense of direction and leadership.
