The US media that accuse Sputnik news agency and RT broadcaster of propaganda have admitted releasing unverified information, Editor-in-Chief of Russia Today and Sputnik Margarita Simonyan, told Sputnik on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the Washington Post newspaper said it could not prove the credibility of the article it published on November 24 on RT and Sputnik’s alleged efforts to undermine the US democracy and their role in spreading fake news across the Internet.
–
“The funniest thing about this is that the ‘excellent’ journalists from the Washington Post, who we are told to look up to, published lies about RT and other websites two weeks ago. After we and hundreds of people on social networks pointed it out to them, they had to admit having published a ‘fake’,” Simonyan said.

Following the initial publication of the November story, Simonyan told CNN that RT had not been contacted for a comment, which should have been a standard approach in this case. On November 16, the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution on countering Russian media. The EU parliament’s resolution said that Sputnik and RT posed a danger to European unity and called for extra European Commission funding for counter-propaganda projects. It also drew parallel between Russian media and the propaganda disseminated by Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia.
