  Wang told his South Korean counterpart that the move harms the foundation of mutual trust between Beijing and Seoul. South Korea’s Foreign Minister Lee Byung-se has assured China that the missile system deployment would not threaten Beijing’s security interests. Seoul and Washington insist that the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense unit would only be used to defend the South against North Korea’s ballistic missiles. The deployment of the THAAD batteries into the southern town of Seong-ju has already triggered massive protests from local residents.
